Curtains or Blinds?

When you want to decorate your windows with some type of covering, curtains and blinds seem to be the most popular choices. Curtains and blinds both have their advantages and disadvantages for use as window treatments in your home and this hub discusses each.

Advantages of Curtains

Curtains would probably win in the ease of hanging department, as they are quick and easy to hang, unless you go for those formal types of swag arrangements. Curtains can often times be bought ready-made to certain size specifications that fit standard window dimensions, so these are definitely the way to go for ease of hanging. All you need to do is unpack them, slide them on the curtain rod and you're good to go.

Curtains are also are available in a huge range of colors - every shade of every color you can think of - especially if you make them yourself; you then have a wide selection of colors to choose from. Even if you don't make them, and buy them either readymade or get some made up by professional curtain makers, you still have a large choice of colors you can choose from.

The many patterns and styles that are available in curtains, like valances, sheers or swags make them a good choice to fit in with certain themes you may have in your home decor. Blinds unfortunately don't use as wide a range of patterned material as do curtains, though you can get them in a limited range of patterns and styles.

The Case for Blinds

Blinds are more fiddly to put up as they come with fittings, screws, etc and you need to use a drill to drill the holes for the fittings and then to drive the screws in place. However there are now blinds that are available that actually don't need all the usual hardware or handyman tools to get them up.

Magic blinds are blinds that can be hung from a curtain rod just like a curtain. Magic blinds have the look of a roman blind and get raised and lowered in a similar fashion to roman blinds, but you don't need any hardware to install them. In fact, they can be up in a minute. All you need to do is unpack them from their packaging and glide them over the curtain rod, just like you would with a curtain.

They have a self locking mechanism attached to the blind which locks it into position so it doesn't swivel or move about on the curtain rod when you're raising or lowering the blind. They come in a limited range of colors and different fabric finishes like suede, duck cotton, and a linen look.

These blinds are set to change the way we usually think about using blinds. No more hassle trying to fit them, especially if you're not a handy person or have the tools required to fit them. They can be up in a jiffy like a curtain, but you get the look of a roman blind.

Very informative hub. I prefer blinds myself as most houses are built now with radiators under the windows. It means in the winter, if you draw the curtains, you lose the heat. At least with blinds, you can close the blinds and keep the curtains tied back. Voted up.

Thanks for your comment Jacui. It's a good point you make about blinds being better when radiators are under the windows.
